At the Food Court Unit

Cycle 3 - Level 1 (ESL)

Unit Evaluation:

Competency 1 - Interacts Orally in English

Competency 2 - Reinvests Understanding of Texts

Competency 3 - Writes & Produces texts

In this unit, students listened to food riddles and demonstrated their understanding by answering questions regarding the descriptions given in the audio.

(Competency 2)

Students also practised ordering from a restaurant where they had to maintain interaction as they participated in the exchanges. Thanks to Vieux Duluth who allowed us to borrow real restaurant menus, the students were able to use functional language in ordering food in a manner that was as close to reality as possible.

 (Competency 1)

Students read about strange dishes from around the world and answered questions about them. Students had to again, demonstrate their understanding of the text.

(Competency 2)

Finally, students created a restaurant comic strip using an online comic builder named BitStrip. Students followed a model that I made for them & used all the available resources to plan and write a comic that used the correct targeted vocabulary & accurate expressions used when ordering from a restaurant.

(Competency 3)

Differentiation: In order to meet the needs of all my students, I had a group of 5 gifted ESL students work on a side project during class time. When they would complete the regular work they would go to the back of the class or to the library & created a game that related to our food theme! We had a blast playing the game & the students were extremely proud of sharing their creative game!

I also showed the students some fun & creative ways to order from a restaurant & challenged my two bilingual students to do something similar. I am still waiting in anticipation for their videos. Below you will find the two videos I showed the students. Have a look!

My students in grade 5 enjoyed the food court unit that we worked on through the month of March. In this unit, students in grade 5 study, read, listen to, write, and discuss around the theme of food & ordering from a restaurant

Model Comic for Students

Student Work

Here is an example of a completed comic from a student during our food unit.

The students enjoyed the project so much that they even began making their own comics at home!
