In this unit, students in grade 6 study, read, write, and discuss about people, things, & events from the past.
Unit Evaluation:
Competency 1 - Interacts Orally in English
Competency 2 - Reinvests Understanding of Texts
Competency 3 - Writes & Produces texts
I began the unit by presenting wonders of my time & discussed their significance to my life & to the world.
Students showed evidence of understanding texts as they correctly identified their wonders, their decades, & provided pertinent reasons as to why they were so important to their time (Competency 2).
- Disco music
- The Beatles
- The internet
- Michael Jackson
- Harry Potter books
- 2010 Winter Olympics
Students prepared & performed an interview with someone older than them. They had to prepare 7 interview questions using the correct question formation. In this activity students applied targeted language conventions and had to formulate the questions correctly on paper (Competency 3).
Finally, students were given a year from their lifetime (2002-2016) & had to research a wonder from that particular year. Students then created a poster where they had to write about their wonder!
In order to help the students be more comfortable, we created a wonder fair! Students circulated and asked one another questions about their wonder using the proper question form. I evaluated the students oral communication during the fair, as well as their writing on their posters (Competency 1 & 3).
