Kindergarten Dino Unit

During my first official contract as a teacher, I worked as a kindergarten and grade one educator at Vaudrin Academy.

In kindergarten we learned, worked and played a long side the theme of our prehistoric friends, the dinosaurs. Below you will find some photographs that can further help you understand the fun we had as we learned all there was to know about these interesting giants!

In order to help the students gain perspective of just how big a T-Rex paw was, we had to compare it to our own feet!

So, we all made an educated guess as to how many we thought could fit and then measured it for ourselves.

Did you know we can fit 36 kinder-feet inside a single T-Rex paw?

We set up centers throughout the classroom and the boys were quite proud of the way they categorized the dinosaur toys (height and length).

We were very thankful for the beautiful weather in May as it allowed us to play a lot of dinosaur games outdoors!

After having studied all the main dinosaurs we wanted to make them race. Again, we each chose our favourite one and raced them outdoors on the pavement.

We also played a Velociraptor tag game!

The students pretended to be Velociraptors and they had to steal orange eggs from the orange dinosaur!

The best part was the growling and scary postures they made while playing the game!

We made fossils and used pastel colours to create our own dino paws. They were then used to create a pathway from the frontdoor of the school, to the kindergarten classroom door.

On Father's Day we made the most adorable dinosaur cards!

The kinders really loved the way they turned out!

They loved it almost as much as having the opportunity to let out the biggest dinosaur roar they could while making them!

Welcome to The Dino-Museum!

Considering Vaudrin is a trilingual school, the students in kindergarten had the oppertunity of learning all about dinosaurs in English, French and Spanish!

I worked with the other two teachers to prepare the students for the science fair and we successfully turned our classroom into The Dino-Museum!

The Spanish teacher focused on teaching the students about the Jurassic era and comparing the difference between a herbivore and a carnivore dinosaurs.

The English teacher created books that allowed the students to showcase which of the dinosaurs was their favourite. She also taught the students about fossils and a whole lot about Triceratop dinosaurs.

As for me, we learned about dinosaurs through numerous songs, making up a zumba dance, and countless activities that incorporated mathematics and art. I was also responsible for taking care of the props throughout the science fair (dino slippers and hats).
